Hey guys,

So, I've decided to hide away my fretted basses for a while and start concentrating on fretless. After playing fretted for ~10 years, I thought fretless would be easier to pick up, but I have found that fretless is a whole different beast. My biggest problem is intonation, of course :). When I bought my fretless thumb, I was happy that it did not have fret position markers (becuase it looks sweet!), but the more I have played, the more I desire additional visual assistance. I was thinking of ways to add fret markers temporarily or even permanantly. I drew in some fret markers with a white pencil, which helped out a lot, but the lines are almost completely faded away only after a couple weeks...

So anyway, as someone who is converting to fretless is there any advice that you can offer me to help me MASTER intonation?

Thanks!

Because of my aquisition of a Fortress bass and the lack of reviews about this bass i will present a little review in this post.

In this post i suggests that the Warwick Fortress bass has a special relationship with the Warwick slogan "the sound of Wood" the following paragraphs will elaborate on this statement.

First of; the hardware part: as most of you know (and can read on the Warwick product page) the Fortress is a bolt-on bass with a wenge neck and a maple body. The 5 string version has J-J pickups, the 4 string version has a P-J pickup setup, most fortress one basses have passive electronics though there are also basses known to have active electronics, further on it has all other distictive Warwick features like a two part bridge and a Just a Nut I. the body of the Fortress one is a so called slab type though it is shaped so it can be worn comfortably (shaped like Fender shapes Presicion basses and Stratocaster guitars) on the back side there is the easy access cavety with tidy finished electronics. the neck sports bell-brass frets and counts 24 of them, easily accessable through the top frets. the neck is thin, especially for a 5 string bass, but feels very nice, it is best comparable with the Fender Jazz bass neck.

Now the sound part: as said, the Fortress has a streight forward sound, but that does not mean it is dull or boring, on the contrary: i think the Fortress has that feature Warwick is proud of mentioning: "the sound of wood" the neck pickup for instance is Precision bass like, with that same beefy sound and dryness of a passive bass.

Attachment 8901

On both pickup the sound is very old-school funk sound, it has that fat slap sound with that earthyness i hinted before.

Attachment 8900

The Bridge pickup has a sound many people know, it is easily comparable with the bridge pickup sound of a Fender Jazz Bass, it also has that 'bass of doom' type of sound people know from Jaco Pastorius but it is distictive because it is more focussed and 'neat' (so not that woollyness a Fender Jazz has)

Attachment 8902

The setup is spot on: the bass neck is just perfect, no flaws, low action on the whole neck. the Bridge is all Warwick, it came very good setup but i adjusted it anyway to fit my personal taste, as i am used to with my Streamers the setup of the bass is as easy as the afore mentioned basses.

Playability is real good, from the first time i picked up this bass i had a wow feeling, it feels like a racing bike! it is fast and feels just naturally, the balance of the instrument is good, as mentioned by others because of the large horn it balances reel good, no hassles here. the weight is just pleasant cause it does not weight very much, it is on of the leighter basses it have had.

All in all i think this combination of materials ends up in a very nice bass that, as a distinctive feature has, a real natural and transparent sound. it is, so to speak, a no-nonsence bass with a pleasant wear and feel.

I just got a Thumb BO 4 recently, and I absolutely love it. However, I've always preferred Streamers and have the opportunity to trade for a Streamer LX 4. It's a beaut too! My thumb is an '05 while the Streamer is a '99. I'm leaning towered it, but am looking for some feedback. My bass is in excellent condition, no real cosmetic flaws. The LX is in very good condition, but does have some dings/scratching by the tail, nothing else though. Does this sound fair, or would I be a fool to do this?

I know they are different tones, but I love them both, with maybe a bit of an edge to the Streamer. I also think the Streamer is more comfortable. So, anyone...thoughts?

Anyway i talked with Paul about those streamers and he pointed to a Spector NS2, he said: "there is a real one" so i explained about the steinberger licence deal of Warwick back in the early eighties, Hmm Paul said; "i did not know this" i could tell right away how his opinion changed about our brand...

A 5 string fretless has continued to elude my grasp. I have gassed for one ever since I first started playing bass. Please help me with my course of action. Currently, I have a 5 string Corvette std. I play mostly jazz; I suspect the fretless will become my main bass. As a college student, I cannot justify spending more than $600. These are some options I am considering.

*I expect that some of these might cripple my budget. I have marked them with an asterisk.*

A) Sell my corvette and buy a used 5 string fretless warwick.*

B) Sell my corvette and buy a used 5 string fretless warwick. And buy a 5 string SX jazz bass, in case I ever need a fretted bass.*

C) Keep my corvette. Buy a fretless 5 string SX jazz bass.

D) Keep my corvette. Buy a 5 string SX jazz bass and a wenge fretless neck from warmoth (~$400) for the SX.*

E) Keep my corvette. Buy a 5 string SX jazz bass, a wenge fretless neck from warmoth for the SX, and EMG (or similar brand) active pups.*

F) Keep my corvette. Buy a used fretless 4 string corvette std (and forever crave the narrow spacing and 5th string).

G) Keep my corvette. Pay for a fretless ebony fingerboard. (Can this be reversed? Can I have them put the wenge board back on?)

H) Keep my corvette. Pay for a fretless ebony fingerboard. Buy a fretted 5 string SX jazz bass.

I) Keep my corvette. Pay for a fretless ebony fingerboard. Buy another 5 string corvette std.*

J) All of the above.*

K) Quit dreaming and resume my practicing.

L) [your idea here]

This bass is only used for recording these days and I've got no need for on board eq. I've also heard that this set-up is the best way to achieve the purest tone from an electric instrument. Does anyone have experience with this type of mod? Any recomendations for the ultimate passive jazz pups? Ive heard that Nordstrand, Bartolini, Duncan all make great passive designs, but I have no experience with them. I am looking for something with a strong well ballanced signal, and must be dead quite. Thanks JJ

Alien neck and body dimensions

I've been looking for an acoustic for a while that feels reasonably close to a more conventional electric and wondered how an Alien might feel?

Is the neck similar to a regular Warwick 4 string - it certainly doesn't look as chunky as many acoustics I've seen?

Also - how deep is the body? Again it looks thinner than most :)

Is the neck similar to a regular Warwick 4 string - it certainly doesn't look as chunky as many acoustics I've seen?

Also - how deep is the body? Again it looks thinner than most :)

It loos like a Corvette 4 String with the MIRROR P/U setup [double p's], Serial Number is D-083545-01
It's a bolt on, but the numbers, when run thru the Serial Numbers Check turns up as a Vampyre
Questionable right there. Also the Auction says it has a mahogany/ birdseye maple body
What gives ?? Sounds like a very questionable deal.
Any comments

Greetings!

I'm trying to understand how long Warwick 'long scale' string are actually.
Will them be enough for the 35" bass? Or are they only for 34"?

Note for admins: I didn't find this info on the website. :(
