First of all, the Hellborg kicks some serious @ss !
I usually don't like things surrounded by hype, so I was real skeptic about the preamp. But it delivers !
The first thing I noticed when I plugged my Thumb into the preamp was that I could HEAR my bass
Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to test it in a live situation, but I did play around with it in the studio and had a lot of fun with it at home.
If I had the money for it, I'd probably buy one - though I am not a "tone freak", as in - I am really happy the way my Thumb sounds through my cheap, chinese Ashdown rig.
My only problem with the Hellborg and actually with my thumb is that they sound too clear, present and articulate - there's no boominess or mud to cover up my bad technique
But I'd definitely recommend the Hellborg for all pros and non-pros, mainly to those who can afford it
To use the words of TM Stevens - "it has @SS and GLASS" and everything in between
here's a little vid where you can hear the Hellborg alongside a Universal Audio La-610 preamp.
thumb in passive mode + preamps all flat + real anemic bassplaying
Decide for yourself which one you like more
take care,
d
